Operation Backpack

Each school year, Women United distributes more than 1,000 backpacks filled with supplies to students in-need.

Starting school with proper school supplies puts a child in the mindset to succeed right from the very first day of class. That’s why United Way of the Lowcountry Women United is working to break any barriers that might prevent a student from succeeding in school.

Women United’s Operation Backpack initiative provides new backpacks full of grade-appropriate supplies to children in-need in Beaufort and Jasper counties. Women United works with school social workers to identify students who would benefit the most from Operation Backpack and who are not being served by other agencies.  The backpacks are then delivered to the schools prior to the start of school so the students have what they need on their first day.

Thanks to community support, Operation Backpack continues to grow each school year. This year, Women United collected monetary donations to purchase pre-made backpacks filled with school supplies that can be used for in-school or virtual learning.
