Lowcountry Movement on Self-Sufficiency (MOSS)
The challenges facing our region didn't happen overnight, and no single organization can solve them alone.
The Lowcountry Movement on Self-Sufficiency brings together employers, nonprofits, government agencies, educators, faith leaders, funders, and community members around one goal: a strong, connected community where everyone in Beaufort and Jasper counties has what they need to be self-sufficient and thriving.
Over the past year, hundreds of community members helped decide where this work should focus. Three priorities rose to the top, chosen because progress here changes everything else:
- Housing.
- Early Childhood Education.
- Pathways to Careers.
Together, we're moving from talk to action.
Long-Term Priorities
Housing
Rally local government, major employers, and private investors around a single message: the Lowcountry needs homes people can afford. That means building public-private partnerships and clearing the regulatory hurdles that stand in the way.
Early Childhood Education
Rebuild the Lowcountry's early childhood education system so it works for everyone it touches. Expand the supply of quality childcare, bring down the cost for families, and create well-paid career paths for the people who teach and care for our youngest children.
Pathways to Careers
Connect people across the Lowcountry to the training, support, and opportunities they need for the jobs of today and tomorrow.
Progress in Motion
- Three taskforces are up and running, each focused on one priority
- A Core Team of six organizations now leads the effort
- Partners created a shared housing messaging guide so the region speaks with one voice
- Planning is underway to pilot Tri-Share in the Lowcountry, splitting childcare costs among employers, families, and the state
- Self Help and the Technical College of the Lowcountry are partnering on a patient care technician cohort
- Partners are exploring a residential community built for educators
- ...and much more to come
