Free Tax Prep is Back and Better Than Ever for Qualified Lowcountry Residents
Tax season is just around the corner, but there’s no need to stress! The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is returning to the Lowcountry to provide free, IRS-certified tax preparation to qualified residents, helping them maximize refunds and achieve financial self-sufficiency.
A collaboration between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Beaufort County Human Services Alliance, the Beaufort County Public Library System, and United Way of the Lowcountry (UWLC), VITA begins its services in early February. Whether you’re a working family, college student, or retiree, VITA ensures you claim every deduction and credit you deserve, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
“Knowing how to manage your money and having the resources you need are essential for building a secure future for yourself and your family,” says Dale Douthat, President and CEO of United Way of the Lowcountry. “VITA helps our community learn how to navigate the tax system and take control of their finances, which is key to achieving financial independence and a better life for everyone.”
Last year, a dedicated team of almost 100 IRS-certified VITA volunteers assisted 2,185 Lowcountry residents, securing more than $2 million in refunds. These refunds empowered residents to pay bills, save for the future, and improve their financial well-being.
