Volunteers have an enormous impact on the health and well-being of the Lowcountry, making a difference in day-to-day life in countless ways. As community needs change, grow, and emerge, the time and talents of volunteers are more important than ever to help those most in need in Beaufort and Jasper counties.
UWLC’s Impact Process is one of the things that make us unique! We ask VOLUNTEERS from the community, who donate to United Way, to tell us how they would like their money invested in the community! We ask them to visit, report, deliberate, and evaluate agencies and programs that serve the residents of Beaufort & Jasper counties. The Community Impact Committee and panel members work hand in hand with the staff of the United Way and agencies, making equitable and responsible investment decisions.

Trained Read Indeed! volunteer reading tutors are matched with children in grades Pre-K through third grade who are identified by school literacy specialists as needing additional help with reading. These are the students who would otherwise fall through the cracks if they did not receive other intervention.
The tutor and child meet to read together for 30 minutes per student each week during the school year, and most of our tutors work with at least three students per visit. This is a significant commitment BUT your time and effort will make a lifetime of difference.
Our new Vello online tutoring program is making it easier for volunteers to engage with students through a safe and secure digital setting. Together, students and volunteer tutors read e-books using screen sharing and audio. The program allows volunteers to conduct their tutor sessions from anywhere with a computer and internet access, making it easy to do without leaving their home or workspace.

Dedicated volunteers are needed to help VITA provide free tax preparation services to people with limited incomes. By helping working families take advantage of programs like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), you can help bring in millions of dollars to the local community — dollars to help families jumpstart their savings, reduce debt and invest in our community.

Consider volunteering as a Workplace Campaign Coordinator. Workplace campaigns bring your colleagues together for a cause. Whether you are a small or large organization, the impact you can make through collective giving is substantial. Workplace campaigns are held during a short period of time, and allow you and your co-workers to raise money to support the United Way! Employees have the option of making a gift by cash, credit card or pledge to donate a portion of their paychecks over the course of the year. Small amounts, bundled together, add up to a large impact and an easy way to give back to the community. We offer an online Workplace Campaign toolkit — complete with helpful email templates, digital brochures and videos. Click here to send us an email for more information.
Calling all United Way donors! We’re looking for Community Champions who are happy to ask their neighbors to join them in supporting United Way. We realize that every neighborhood is unique so we can help you personalize your community champion campaign using the tools (email, letter and social media templates; print or digital brochures; and videos) available in our Community Champion toolkit. We’ll even send the emails and letters to your neighbors on your behalf. Click here to send us an email for more information.
