CAPA exists to break the destructive cycle of child abuse and neglect by equipping parents, children and their caregivers with necessary knowledge, skills and values.

CAPA provides school-based safety and character development education programs for children in elementary and middle schools. Using class discussion, role-play, videos and handouts, the children learn about child abuse and personal safety, how to communicate their feelings, and how to get along with others. CAPA offers adolescent pregnancy prevention programs to youth in many settings including youth groups, schools, teen centers, community groups, and after-school programs. Contact April Fletcher-Clark outreach@capabeaufort.org

Parenting programs are available to all members of the community who care for children whether they be parents, grandparents, foster parents, or caregivers. The Positive Parenting Program, also known as Triple P, is a science-based approach to parenting that has been used for over 25 years. Participants receive workbooks and take part in activities and role-playing opportunities to increase their knowledge of positive parenting. The class meets weekly and a full session is eight classes. There is a $25 per session. CAPA’s parent support group, affectionately named PS We Love You, meets every other week and is a safe place where parents can discuss their feelings and frustrations while fellowshipping with others. A modified version is offered in the Beaufort County Detention Center. After release, parents are encouraged to complete the full program. Contact April Fletcher-Clark parenting@capabeaufort.org

Safe Sleep Education is offered to community members to reduce the number of babies dying accidentally because of unsafe sleep practices. The program educates parents and caregivers on the importance of safe sleep practices and can provide cribs to families who cannot otherwise afford a secure place for their babies to sleep. CAPA operates a shelter for abused and neglected children. The Open Arms Shelter provides protective housing and a nurturing environment for children removed from their homes. The shelter is open 24 hours a day, 365 days per year and serves children from birth to age 21. Placements are made through the Department of Social Services. CAPA’s Closet thrift shop accepts donations from community members who in turn receive a tax deduction. Donated items are sold at very reasonable prices and all proceeds benefit the shelter and other CAPA programming.
